Beautifully filmed in widescreen black & white, Bakumatsu zankoku monogatari is known by sundry English titles. The subtitled 35 mm print I saw called it The Executioners but the current subtitled DVD Brutal Story at the End of the Tokugawa Shogunate comes closer to an accurate translation of the Japanese title. It's also known as Cruel Story of the Shogunate's Downfall or simply as A Cruel Story.

This is a tale of Shinsen-gumi, the anti-royalist samurai organization of Kyoto about whom many films have been made, & many histories & novels written, many manga & anime drawn. They rose in power just before the Meiji Restoration as the Tokugawa period was coming to a close, & their goal was to preserve the Tokugawa government at any cost. The Shinsen Group were notoriously cruel & whenever any member of their group tried to leave the organization, they were hunted down & killed.

This film version shows the Shinsen group as gross & dirty, some members have even gone insane. This ignores previous directors' tendency to clean up the group's image at least a little, often a lot. The historical & semi-historical figures include Kondo who assassinated the group's founder Serizawa in order to become its leader, & the deeply sadistic homosexual Hijikata who was the group's chief assassin, who summarily resolves internal strife with his sword. But in this film the events are viewed from slightly "outside" the core of Shinsengumi, by a naive young member. In an early scene, a Shinsen member questions the humanity of the group, resulting in his assassination. He is given a half-dozen sword cuts then allowed to bleed to death just outside the Shinsen enclave, a heartless, sad death.

The main star is Hashizo Okawa, looking a bit chubby that year, but still beautiful. His leading lady is Junko Fuji best known for her yakuza series in which she plays the Red Peony Gambler (Hibotan bakuto, 1968, & further episodes). Supporting cast includes Sayuri Tachikawa, Ryohei Uchida, Choichiro Kawarazaki & Ko (Isao) Kimura. Hashizo Okawa plays Enami, who starts out idealizing the Shinsen group & joins out of admiration. He is a country bumpkin who wants to become a true samurai, & at first he seems rather weak-willed. He is confused by what he sees within the group & the first time he observes their extreme cruelty, he vomits. Yet when Enami gets to the point of actually volunteering to perform a beheading, he is clearly losing his innocence. Junko Fuji as Sato the gentle serving girl is the unhappy observer of Enami's corruption. For the mid-60s this was one of the bloodiest & grimmest samurai films & quite critical of the militarism of the samurai class. It was a low budget product filmed under tight deadline, but clearly both director & screenwriter took the job seriously & did a vastly better job that was required for them to remain employed. The cast was fine enough to really bring it off, & Hashizo was especially lucky to star in something this serious, at a time when he was typecast in tame family films as a happy go lucky sort of samurai. The film won a handful of awards when it was new, & it still deserves to be regarded a minor classic.

The title character, Takezo (later renamed MM), is a fierce beast who lives for fighting and war. The opening of the film sees him crawling in the mud and around slain soldiers to find the young lad who joined him in battle. Takezo mourns that "there'll be no more wars, and what shall I do ?".
The pair are sheltered by a woman and her daughter, who live by stealing from dead soldiers. All four are on the run, as Takezo has in fact deserted. And when Takezo is in turn deserted by the other three, be becomes an outlaw, killing to escape capture. But he feels obliged to return home, to pass on news and check on his sister's welfare.

The game of cat and mouse has begun. The Shogun's vassal's men fail, and the job of capturing the fugitive falls to a wily priest. I found this film at least watchable and, at times, engrossing. I could well have imagined the great Mifune playing the lead role.
Takezo is bursting with vigour and aggression, seething like a wild beast. When he is captured, he is trussed up like a chicken and strung on a high tree to twist in the wind and "have his eyes picked out by the crows". During this scene, he holds a long dialogue with his captors, mainly the priest. His rasping, screeching and furious voice is nearly spellbinding.

The performances are great all round. Apart from the lead actor, the wily priest gives a performance which runs the gamut from serious to hilarous. And the spiteful and scheming grandmother is a real blast too. This story is reportedly a classic and has been filmed many times. My views it that Takezo is a kind of Japanese everyman. Seething with passion but hemmed in by a society which no longer values warriors.

A beast who is being coaxed towards spiritual awakening. Loyal to certain people, including family, but betrayed at unexpected times. And there is some simply beautiful scenery. Panoramic views of snow-capped mountains and green fields.

Tokugawa Shogun III, hates his eldest son Takechiyo; all his love is given to his younger son Tokumatsu. One day, he orders Takechiyo to an initiation rite in Yedo (today's Tokio). Takechiyo lives far away under the surveillance of Hotta Masamori, head of the Skura clan, where he was also raised. Hotta does suspect some kind of treachery, but he can not ignore the direct command of the Shogun. Therefore, he starts on his travel with Takechiyo and seven accompanying samurais. A large army under the command of Iba Shoemon, a vassal of the Shogun, attacks their night camp in the vicinity of a copper mine. Hotta dies in this first battle, but Takechiyo and the samurai manage to escape. They are chased by the army, and several skirmishes between the small force and the larger army follow.

Tension mounts as the competition nears, and a mysterious ronin (Wakayama) takes on his own vendetta against the popular Shirogoro, risking not only his life, but that of his wife as well. She is the sister of one of Yagyu’s top sword instructors and has secrets of her own!

Hirokazu Koreeda's (Maborosi, After Life) latest is a gentle comedy-drama that deconstructs the legend of the brave Samurai warrior and the Bushido code of seeking honor through revenge. The title of the film means flower, and Hana wants to change the symbol of the cherry blossom associated with the warrior spirit to one that represents a peaceful and nurturing life. Engendered by the earthy humor of the underclass, the film has many laughs, a wonderful soundtrack of joyous Renaissance music, and colorful characters brought to life by an excellent ensemble cast, yet it meanders and lacks a single crystallizing moment that brings its point home.

Starring Toshiro Mifune, directed by Hiroshi Inagaki. Matsugoro (Mifune) is a poor rickshaw driver whose animated spirit and optimistic demeanor make him a favorite of the town. Matsu helps an injured boy, Toshio, and is hired by the boy's parents, Kotaro and Yoshioko, to transport the boy to and from doctor appointments. Matsu comes to love the boy and his parents. When Toshio's father dies, Matsu becomes a surrogate father, helping to raise the boy and secretly falling in love with Toshio's mother Yoshioko. But Matsu knows there is a great gulf between their classes and there seems no hope that Matsu can ever be more than the rickshaw man to the mother and son. Tough and ready Mitsu, the rickshaw man, goes in for anything rough and tumble. His life changes, however, when he crosses paths with Toshio, a young boy who has injured himself. As thanks for helping the boy to the doctor, Toshio's parents, the Yoshiokas, invite Mitsu to dinner and he gladly accepts their offer. They become close and when Mr. Yoshioka dies from an illness, the family asks Mitsu to serve as the young boy's tutor. Mitsu does an exemplary job readying Toshio for school, instilling in him the honesty and honor which are so much a part of his own character.
After Toshio leaves for school, Mitsu evidences an interest in Mrs. Yoshioka, but their difference in station keeps him from expressing his desire. Mitsu's repressed attraction for the lovely widow grows, driving him to his death at the film's climactic end. The Rickshaw Man is a sentimental favorite of Japanese cinema.

As it turns out, it's in protest to his lord raping and killing a girl and her samurai husband. This scandal is quickly covered up as the Akashi lord happens to be the Shogun's younger brother. What makes matters worse is that this reckless scoundrel will be soon appointed to a higher political position which could prove to be detrimental for the entire Shogunate. In response to that, a plot is hatched: 13 assassins will undertake the suicide mission to murder him on his way back from Edo.

The second chapter in Eiichi Kudo's Samurai Revolution trilogy bears so many similarities to its predecessor, Thirteen Assassins, that it might as well be a re-imagining of the same story. In the spirit of the anti-establishment sentiment that was prevalent in the jidai-geki of the early 60's, The Great Duel revolves around a group of revolutionaries who hatch a plot to ambush and assassinate a chancelor in an attempt to keep a corrupt, power-hungry minister from taking control of the Shogunate. The austere, very disciplined style is enhanced by beautiful black and white cinematography, sparse use of music and a pacing that doesn't rush to its final conclusion but takes time to examine and shed light on the characters. Kudo might be little known to the west, but certain scenes in The Great Duel reveal him to be a skillfull craftsman. Mis-en-scene is utilized to such effect that when a poor samurai has to murder his family (off screen), you'd be forgiven for completely missing it. The ambush in the finale is similar in many respects to the one from Thirteen Assassins; more loud and messy than stylized. In some ways, it anticipates Kinji Fukasaku's chaotic style from the early 70's. But what realism is achieved that way is diluted by the occasionally silly swordfighting (extras just waving swords at each other) and the bodyguards' hard effort not to kill our heroes. All in all it is a solid jidai-geki that combines politics, drama and an action-packed finale but doesn't quite rise to the cream of the crop.

Eleven samurai are sent to avenge the murder of their lord —and guard the future of their small clan— who was murdered by the arrogant and cowardly brother of the Shogun, in this little-known, superbly-directed and acted 1960's Samurai classic. The film features several intriguing plot-twists as well as provide authentic glimpses into both the Samurai ethos and, interestingly, its interplay with hostile political forces which two decades later (following the story's own periodization) would spell the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the beginning of the Meiji Restoration (as seen, namely, through one antifeudal and inventively modern character who joins the protagonists in their quest).

As he tours the countryside he discovers the political maneuvering which led to his fathers death is still widespread, and his childhood love who is now one of the lord's concubines has become an unwilling pawn. She has given birth to a boy and a rival faction has decided to kill the boy and blame Bunshiro. Based on a story by Shuhei Fujisawa, who also wrote the stories "Twilight Samurai" and "Hidden Blade", Semi Shigure is a personal and intimate portrait of the life of a lowly ranked samurai. For fans of the genre, it's a must see.

The film presents a deceptively simple and elegantly told martial arts fable, set against a backdrop of an increasingly militarized japan. The fight scenes , tho admirably staged and completely credible (and shocking in their immediacy), are merely the seasoning on a powerful tale of good vs. evil. The stylistic flourishes and acrobatic excesses which plague most other martial arts movies are completely absent, and that is a welcome and long overdue development. The script seamlessly fuses the protagonists' journeys of self-discovery with the setting in which the story unfolds. The director's calm, measured approach is refreshing in its economy, a rare thing in a martial arts film. There is a charming honesty about the whole project that makes it difficult to resist..

As the two protagonists wrestle with their own diametrically opposed natures and strive to discover the secret of their training, the inevitable standoff between them is subdued but satisfying, like the film itself. The supporting characters (and I'm thinking mainly of the evil army general), though two-dimensional, are well-written and performed. The acting is uniformly excellent, a laudable accomplishment since apparently many of the martial artists are non-actors..

Miyamoto Musashi was the most famous swordsman in Japanese history. His legendary exploits have been portrayed in many books and films. The most famous version of his life story was written by Yoshikawa Eiji, and formed the basis of the Academy Award winning SAMURAI TRILOGY starring Mifune Toshiro which is the version most Americans are familiar with. While that trilogy is a great introduction to the samurai, it omits much of the most interesting and important parts of the story. The best and most complete version of the Musashi story was filmed 6 years later as a 5 part series starring Nakamura Kinnosuke and directed by Uchida Tomu. Needless to say, this has always been the most popular version of the Musashi story in Japan, with all the important developments and duels missing from the earlier production. This series also featured noted Yakuza star Takakura Ken in the pivotal role of Sasaki Kojiro, Musashi’s arch enemy, his last samurai role until 1994. Alternately known as ZEN & SWORD, or UNTAMED FURY we have the entire series available on home video with English subtitles for the very first time. Also known as UNTAMED FURY, this film starts as 2 survivors of the Battle Of Sekigahara struggle to escape. The two childhood friends, Takezo and Matahachi manage to get away, and are helped by a mother and daughter who rob the dead of their weapons and armor to sell for a modest living. When brigands come to take the women’s hoard, Takezo bravely steps forward and defeats them single-handedly. When he tries to go back to his hometown he’s hunted down like a dog by the victorious Tokugawa forces, and has to survive cruel treatment. This film introduces us to some of the main characters in Musashi’s life who are seen throughout the entire series.

The elder brother of Katsu Shintaro, and perhaps the strongest swordsman in the history of Japanese films, Wakayama Tomisaburo is best known internationally for his definitive portrayal of Ogami Itto (Lone Wolf, Assassin With Child) in the Baby Cart film series. In addition, he also starred in many other films and TV series, always showing his amazing prowess with weaponry. Never using doubles for his stunts or swordplay, he has risked life and limb to create some of the most memorable moments in the world of the Samurai Film. No other film star could match his ‘Iaido’ (Quick Draw Sword technique), or his ability to spin spears and staffs as he cut down scores of foes. Maverick director Kinji Fukasaku's take on the samurai epic is much like his late 60s / early 70s gangster films - chock full of characters, story elements and stylistic flourishes. In other words - good fun. The story begins in the early 17th Century with the death of the Tokugawa Shogun. The question of who will take his place is not as straightforward as it should be - particularly since it is thought that poison was the cause of death. His eldest son - the stuttering and slightly disfigured Iemitsu - was not favoured by his father or surviving mother. However, he has loyal followers who have been working against allowing the younger handsome Tadanaga to assume the power. The two brothers fall into a struggle against each other due to pride, misdirection from their supporters and outbursts of emotion. Along the way, helpers of each side fall by the wayside while ambushes, betrayals and maneuvering for political position become the methods of battle. The emperor's people are happy to see the battle continue between the sons since it will weaken the Shogun authority in the end. At the centre of much of the maneuvering is Iemitsu's swordfighting teacher - Yagyu. Not only is he crafty in using Iemitsu, his supporters, elders and the system itself to further his agenda, he also makes use of samurai without masters to do his bidding. Of course, his end goals don't necessarily line up with what others want... His deviousness comes out slowly during the film which makes it all the more interesting waiting to find out where it's headed. Fukasaku keeps things moving briskly. Occasionally too briskly, but it's never at the expense of the story. There are several moments when a character shows up or an event occurs and you feel like perhaps you've missed something. But if you just trust Fukasaku, he usually fills in the gaps in one of the following scenes - he expects the audience to stay with him. The fights are solid and exciting. You never quite know who is going to perish or end up bloodied, so the suspense stays high. As mentioned, little directorial flourishes pop up from time to time to keep things visually interesting and to change the pace of the movie - sudden freeze frames with narration, fast zooms, a set of still photos that depicts a meeting, etc. And Sonny Chiba is along for the ride.

The series portrayed the adventures of a roving samurai, Akikusa Shintaro (whose real name is Matsudaira Nobuchiyo), played by Ose Koichi. Shintaro is the older half-brother of Ienari, the 11th Tokugawa shogun. Because he is the son of a concubine, he has no claim to power, so he assumes the guise of a wandering spy-swordsman (along with the name Shintaro) to seek out and eliminate plots by rival warlords, in this way protecting his younger brother, who is still a minor. Acting on secret orders from roju (chief councillor) Matsudaira Sadanobu, Shintaro gathers information in the various fiefdoms and battles rival warriors and spies, aided by his Iga Ninja friend Tombei the Mist (Japanese: Kiri no Tonbei), as played by Fuyukichi Maki. Shintaro is also helped by Shusaku (played by the 9 or 10 year old Omori Shunsuke ), whose father has been kidnapped by Koga ninja, and whom Shusaku and Shintaro are also trying to find.

The tragic story of Gonza, a handsome ladies man, set in the Tokagawa Period, a time in which appearences are very important. Gonza competes with Bannojo for the honor to perform the tea ceremony to celebrate the birth of an heir to the lord of their clan. To see the sacred tea scrolls Gonza promises to marry the daughter of the family which possesses them, even though he is unofficially engaged to another. When studying the scrolls with Osai, the mother of the house, Bannajo sneaks into the house and steals their obis and runs through the town proclaiming the two as adulterers.

Based upon the buranku play by Chikamatsu, Yari no Gonza (Gonza the Spearman) becomes a complex character study of a samurai, who is a master in the use of the yari (the spear), which no longer is of value, as the nation is at peace. In order to both advance as samurai and make a name of himself, Gonza has to master an art form, the one of his choice is tea ceremony. At the same time Gonza is a very beautiful man, so beautiful, that songs are written about him.(...)
Shinoda previously used Chikamatsu as source with Double Suicide (1969), but in Yari no Gonza he recreates Chikamatsu by using the story and characters to advance his own vision towards cinema. Shinoda thus continues to recreate a unique style, which on one side is highly stylised and on the other liberated by its dynamic mise-en-scene vs. buranku. The result is one of the most intelligent adaptations of a Chikamatsu text and a very unique period piece.

In the Edo period, a nameless ronin (Toshiro Mifune) accepts an assignment to go to a mountain pass and wait. Near the pass he stops at an inn where a collection of characters gather, including a gang led by Gentetsu (Shintarô Katsu) set on stealing shogunate gold that's soon to come over the pass. When the Ronin's assignment becomes clear, to help the gang, he is ordered to kill the inn's residents, including a woman he's rescued from an abusive husband. He's reluctant to murder innocent people; then he learns that the gold shipment is a trap and he's part of a double cross. How he sorts through these divided loyalties is a test of his samurai honour, and perhaps of his love for a woman.

Izo Okada, a ronin (masterless samurai), desperately seeks a way out of his financial straits. He allies himself with the Tosa clan under the ruthless leader, Takechi, and imagines that he has come up in the world. But Takechi makes Izo a killer and a puppet, filled with self-loathing and a need to stop.
Hideo Gosha's Hitokiri is set against the background of such profiteers, in particular the Tosa Loyalist Party headed by Hanpeita Takechi (portrayed by Gosha regular Nakadai). Though officially fighting on the side of such revered modernist reformers as Saigo Takamori and Ryoma Sakamoto (played here by former Nikkatsu star Yujiro Ishihara), Takechi followed his own agenda, using a squad of stealthy samurai assassins as his main weapon to eradicate his enemies, which included those who were officially his allies.

An adventurous and daring sailor sets sail to the castle of an ailing king to stop an evil premier, hungry for power and wealth, from succeeding the throne and marrying the king's beautiful daughter. Along the way, with the help of some courageous rebels and a lustful wizard, he must overcome the powers of a bewitching witch, a band of ruthless pirates, and the castle's Imperial guards. He must also free those kidnapped into slavery and restore the king's reputation.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies from Toho studios. This movie is about a courageous sailor named Luzon (Sinbad in the American version) who tries to save a kingdom and a king's reputation from a corrupted premier, with the help of some rebellious but hilarious rebels. This movie is nothing short of a sword-wielding battle, gigantic castle, wizard, witch, king, prince, princess, pirates, exotic dancers, heroes, action, and magic. It's fun to watch and follow, fit for adults and children. Don't shy away from the woman-loving wizard and the stone-turning witch! This movie has Japanese veteran actor Toshiro Mifune, beautiful Japanese belles Mie Hama, Kumi Mizuno, and Akiko Wakabayashi, veteran Toho screenwriters Takeshi Kimura and Shinichi Sekizawa, and music composer Masaru Sato. With a combination of drama, tragedy, humor, special effects, music, magic, and adventure, this film is sure a treat for all adventure/sci-fi loving fans. I always have a good time watching this film.

Hiroyuki Sanada (“The Last Samurai, The Twilight Samurai”) stars in this period samurai film that sets around the edo era (18th century) that is based on a novel by Daisaku Ikuta. Sukeroku Sukedachiya, plays by Mr Sanada, is a samurai-for-hire who returns to his hometown after 7 years and discovers some clues to his past.

"Sukedachi-ya [Sukeroku ]" is an action-comedy bursting with the sort of bubbly energy and wacky antics not usually associated with the Golden Age samurai movies. Think an over-caffeinated "Yojimbo," with the Toshiro Mifune character as a happy-go-lucky flake instead of a sardonic schemer.
Though a “sukedachiya” (avenger-for-hire), Sukeroku (Hiroyuki Sanada) never draws his sword, preferring to humiliate his victims by whacking them with a clothes pole, or tripping and tying them with a rope. But as light in the waraji (sandals) as he may seem, he has become a success of sorts, doing what he loves. For one thing, as a lowly commoner, he gets enormous satisfaction from cutting haughty samurai down to size. For another, he has the daring, resourcefulness and smarts needed to make a go of his unusual occupation.
After an opening that comically flashes through the hero's career, the film settles down to its story: Sukeroku returns to his home in Joshu (present-day Gunma Prefecture) after an absence of seven years, first to visit his mother's tiny gravestone on a wind-swept hillside, then to parade his riches before the astonished citizens of his native village.

Why has the samurai sword always been such a powerful symbol of Japanese culture? Dr. Inazo Nitobe, the man pictured on Japan's 5,000-yen note, tried to answer that question for the world. As a Japanese diplomat at the League of Nations, he was asked by a western colleague how - without religious instruction - the Japanese could teach their children right from wrong. So in the year 1900, Dr. Nitobe wrote a book in English called Bushido - the code of the samurai. He wrote that this warrior code became the credo by which most Japanese lived their lives. And, he wrote, just as the code of the samurai is the soul of Japan, the sword is the soul of the samurai. For Dr. Nitobe, the sword is a work of art that represents the soul of the samurai. But originally the sword was not the samurai's weapon of choice. In the beginning, they fought from horseback, and their skill was with the bow and arrow. So why did the sword, not the bow and arrow, become so important to the samurai and to Japan? To find the answer we must go deep into the history and legends of this ancient land.

One of the great classics of Japanese Cinema by Tomu Uchida , this is a movie that tells a marvelous story about how a lowly lancer is forced to make a choice between life and honor. Showing the corruption of the upper class and their brutality towards those of lower rank, this film is the precursor to some popular recent films, most notably the great Fujisawa Shuhei's "Twilight Samurai" and "Bushi no Ichibun". Gonpachi is portrayed by the longtime star Kataoka Chiezo in one of his most heartfelt performances. The tension mounts throughout the film building to an exciting and surprising conclusion. A masterpiece in glorious black and white, this film ranks with some of the best works of Akira Kurosawa, Sadao Yamanaka, and Daisuke Ito.

A key work of post-war Japanese cinema. As decisively as Kurosawa before him, Uchida broke the conventions of the chambara or sword fight film with his witty, loose-limbed A Bloody Spear at Mount Fuji, the first work he made after returning from eight years in Manchuria. His sojourn there, under the spell of the crazed militarist Amakasu Masahiko who ran the Manchurian Film Cooperative, suggests how easily Uchida slipped from the romantic leftist populism of his pre-war social critiques to an uneasy admiration for bushido values, for empire, emperor and warrior 'ethics'. Bloody Spear marks Uchida's post-war return to Japanese cinema and to progressive principles, but his homecoming is markedly ambivalent in its values. As Craig Watts has written, 'both progressive and nostalgic, humanistic and nationalistic, peaceful and violent, A Bloody Spear at Mount Fuji, like the Japanese experience in Manchuria, is an aggressive conglomeration of extremes.' From its shambling 'on the road' opening, scored with jaunty jazz and marked by a flagrantly artificial setting and welter of incident, to its Shane-like ending, the film takes in a remarkable range of characters and classes, of tones and traditions. Its narrative has a peculiar stalling quality, as though Uchida were determined to suspend the expectations of the samurai film by deferring the violence forever. Full of subplots and spin-offs, scatology, sentimentality, and social satire, this simple tale, about a samurai delivering a tea cup to Edo, becomes a sprawling, digressive epic whose culmination - a fight to the death amongst gushing sake barrels - shocked the Japanese audiences of its time with its sheer vehemence.

Set during the Edo period under the Tokugawa shogunate, Nemuri Kyôshirô is a mysterious samurai with sleepy eyes whose mother is a noble’s daughter and whose father is a fallen Western priest. His trademark fighting technique is the Engetsu-Sappo, literally meaning "The Full Moon Cut." It is a technique in which he draws a circle with his sword -- his opponent is always slain by the time the circle is completed.
"I'm just someone who's pissed off at all mankind even though I'm a man myself. I'm past the point of no return... I know not what the future holds, but in the time that I have, I shall be the ruin of evil men that cross my path."

Nemuri Kyôshirô 1: Sappocho is the first of the series , it is also called Sleepy Eyes of Death #1. In it, the ronin Nemuri Kyôshirô is embroiled in a plot to grab a jade statue that contains damning evidence of a clan's smuggling activities. His character, brimful of cynicism and ennui, is a perfect example of the world-weariness displayed by both noir antiheroes and ronin, jaded men who have seen too much death and the worst side of human nature.

After their side loses, they seek shelter in the isolated home of a widow, Oko, and her daughter, Akemi. Oko seduces Matahachi, who forgets his betrothal to the virtuous Otsu. Oko, Matahachi, and Akemi go to Kyoto, but Takezo returns to the village. Matahachi's family rejects Takezo's report and has him arrested for treason. A monk rescues him from death and sentences him to the study of the samurai code. Otsu and Takezo fall in love, and she promises to wait for him when he sets off on the road as a knight errant.

The closing chapter in Eiichi Kudo's Samurai Revolution trilogy is a reworking of the same story as the previous two, Thirteen Assassins and The Great Duel. It's almost identical so if you're familiar with the other two you'll be able to guess every plot point in advance. I guess that puts Kudo in the good company of Howard Hawks as a director who has done the same movie three times.

The novelty factor might have worn out by now, but Eleven Samurai is still a good example of the formal mid 60's chambara with a political vein running through it. The Abe clan is about to be abolished unjustly due to the rash actions of a nearby daimyo, who just so happens to be the former Shogun's son. A plot is devised by the Abe clan to assassinate him as he returns from Edo but things become complicated when a devious minister gets involved. The titular eleven samurai are trusted with carrying out the assassination and the protagonist leading them will be familiar to chambara enthusiasts as Kiba Okaminosuke from Hideo Gosha's Samurai Wolf. Sadly Kudo keeps things very black and white on the morality level by making the daimyo a spoiled, arrogant, petulant jerk-off so you have the good guys avenging their clan on one side and the villain on the other. The corrupt machinations of politics are personified (and condemned) in the form of the minister who instead of punishing the Shogun's son decides to abolish the Abe clan to avoid a scandal. Not really hard to sympathize with them. What makes up for the predictable plot and poorly developed drama is the final battle; there's very good DP work, rain and mud adding to the feeling and some decent swordsmanship going on so the film ends on a high note. If you've seen any of the previous two in Kudo's trilogy you should know exactly what to expect. Nothing ground-breaking for sure, but a solid, entertaining hour and a half to be had for chambara afficionados.

Produced to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the death of Japanese film pioneer Shozo Makino, Ronin Gai is primarily a tale of downtrodden people finding new purpose and hope amidst severe disadvantage, but director Kazuo Kuroki is equally adept with nihilist attitude and swift, bloody action sequences that are unflinchingly violent and not for the faint of heart. (Future cult director Takashi Miike served as assistant director here; he obviously learned from the experience.) Parallels to Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven are readily apparent, but Ronin Gai came first, and it's a must-see for fans of the samurai genre

Before he can act on his dream he becomes ill with a fever after tasting some sashimi made from shell fish, but an investigation reveals that the poisoning was not due to a human conspiracy, but a poor choice of food out of season. After three days he awakes but finds that the toxin from the food has blinded him. Kayo is summoned by Shinnojo's family to explain how the couple will survive. His uncle laments that he no longer knows anybody with influence in the castle, and asks Kayo if she knows of anybody. She relates how Toya Shimada, the chief duty officer in the castle and a samurai of high rank, offered to help and they tell her to act upon his offer of assistance. A message from the castle brings the good news that Shinnojo's stipend of rice will remain the same, and for life but his aunt tells him that Kayo was seen with another man. He has Tohuhei, his faithful servant, follow her. Kayo notices that she is being followed, and although Tokuhei offers to cover for her, she reveals to Shinnojo that Shimada offered to help but with a price, shown when he forced himself upon her. He then solicited two additional trysts by threatening to tell Shinnojo about the first. An enraged Shinnojo divorces her and orders her out of his house. When it is revealed to him that Shimada had nothing to do with maintaining his stipend, but that it came out of gratitude from the lord of the clan himself, Shinnojo seeks to renew his skill with the sword as a blind man to avenge the dishonor of Kayo. Through Tokuhei he sends a message to Shimada to set up a duel, with the additional message to not underestimate him. The two samurai meet at the stables near the river to decide their destinies.

Kakushi-toride no san-akunin (1958)
The story follows two greedy peasants in feudal Japan, Tahei and Matashichi, who are returning home from a failed attempt to profit from a war between neighboring clans. En Route they encounter the remnants of the defeated tribe that consists, most notably, of a famous General and a Princess who are hiding out in a fortress in the mountains. General Rokurota Makabe and Princess Yuki need to escape into allied territory with their large supply of gold so that they can rebuild their shattered clan. To do this the Peasants are tricked into helping them, with the promise that they will receive a large share of the gold when the destination is reached. Along the way, the General's prowess is put to the test as he must guide the 4, and later 5 with the inclusion of a freed slave, through close encounters with the pursuing enemy, and out of difficult situations the bumbling peasants manage to get them into.

In 16th century Japan, farmers in a small village face the prospect of again losing their crops to a band of roving thieves. Their solution is to go to the nearest city and see if they can hire samurai to protect them. The farmers are poor and can only offer food and lodging but they soon recruit Kambei Shimada who determines that they will need a total of seven samurai to properly guard the village. Slowly, he recruits other samurai for their task and once complete, move tho the village. There they teach the farmers basic self defense and fortify the village itself. When the bandits attack, they are prepared but suffer many losses.
